Data Logger File Format

To load a data logger file:

  1. Select Import from the File menu.

  1. From Data Logger Format, select the format of the data logger file, or the data logger manufacturer and model if listed. Single column files consist of a single column of alternating time and drawdown. Multiple column files consist of 2 or more columns, which may contain time and drawdown for multiple wells, as well as other information. Columns can be separated by spaces, tabs, or commas.

  1. Use the Select button to select the file name.

  1. Select the time and water level units for the file.

  1. Indicate the total number of columns of data in the file.

  1. Under Column Assignments, specify which columns contain the time values and which columns contain the drawdown values for each well. It is important that these values are correct. To verify the file format, select View File to load and display the file into the selected text editor. Columns can be delimited by tabs, spaces, or commas.

  1. Select Import to load the file.

If necessary, use the View File button to view the file before loading. This will load the file into Windows Notepad or the text editor specified in Options | Customize. Use this option to ensure that the selected file and units are correct.

In most cases, file headers do not need to be removed from the file. The application will automatically begin reading time and drawdown in the correct location.

Importing Clock Time Formatted Time

It is preferable to import time using decimal elapsed time. However, some data logger files have only clock time, in a format such as hh:mm:ss or MM/DD/YY hh:mm:ss. Some include milliseconds with the time, and some include milliseconds in a separate column.

If you select the Clock Time format, you will be able to specify a separate column for milliseconds. If milliseconds are included as part of clock time, specify the same column for milliseconds as for time.

If milliseconds are included as part of the clock time, it must be separated from seconds using a ".", for example 7/14/2010 9:35:43.138 AM where 138 is the milliseconds portion of the time.

Date and time are interpreted based on your Windows settings. Go to Control Panel | Regional and Language Options to see how your Windows configuration formats date and time.
